Hiatus
I think I have taken this as far as it makes sense for now. The current state of LLMs yields a lot of problems with this approach the deeper you go with it, and really only Claude Sonnet seems capable fulfilling roles, but is too expensive at the moment for this type of usage.
The goal of the prototype was to dig into what it would take to have LLM driven simulants you can talk to instead of NPCs, and it sort of works. The primary challenge at every turn is that the LLM with glom onto one thing at the expense of everything else and cannot juggle priorities well. They hyper obsess, gaslight and set themselves and each other up for failure often.
Interesting? Entertaining? Sure! It was a blast developing and running it to see what nonsense would unfold next, but in the end, I found it equally confusing, frustrating and seemingly hopeless as well.
The idea needs a thorough rethinking, or parts of this approach could be utilized in another way. Ideas are still brewing. We'll see what the future holds for this fascinating technology and others like it.
